Differences Between NCAA Divisions I, II and III The NCAA’s three divisions were created in 1973 to align like-minded campuses in the areas of fairness, competition and opportunity. Division I schools may provide tuition and fees, room and board, books and other expenses related to attendance at the school. Division II full scholarships cover tuition and fees, room and board, and course-related books and supplies. Division III schools do not offer athletics scholarships. To find the NCAA schools you’re interested in, visit on.ncaa.com/MemberMap. For more information about the differences between divisions, watch this video. Choosing a College Choosing the right college or university can sometimes seem like an overwhelming process. Visit on.ncaa.com/Choosing for suggestions of questions to ask NCAA schools recruiting you. New Task: Preliminary Certifications To provide greater clarity on what you need to meet the Eligibility Center’s initial-eligibility requirements, a new task has been added for student accounts. This new task, titled “Division I/II Preliminary Academic Decision Available,” will be assigned to your account after a preliminary academic decision has been made. Preliminary academic certifications are typically attempted using coursework you completed during grades/years 9-11, but may be attempted earlier depending on when transcripts are received and/or you are activated to (listed on) an NCAA Division I or II school’s institutional request list. The task information includes an overview of the requirements you have and have not yet met, providing you with clear guidance on their current status. Click here for a sample of this task. Share this information with your family and high school counselor, who can help guide you on your next steps toward certification.Ask a Former Student-AthleteAs a former Indiana University diver, Kristen Hayden became the first African American woman to win a USA Diving National Championship. “Growing up, I didn’t have a role model that looked like me,” Hayden said. “I really wanted a USA diver that I could look up to and aspire to be like. I’m actively working to try and make USA Diving more of a diverse place so that young divers can come onto the pool deck, feel welcome and have leaders to look up to in their diving community.” Click here to read more of her story. |
